This time, I have decided to suspend my live activities that have been going on for more than 50 years. I am very sorry for the sudden notice to the audience, musicians, and the Jazz clubs.
I will cancel all the performances at the live show that have already been booked, and I will cause inconvenience and concern to the audience who were looking forward to it, the band leaders who hired me, and the Jazz clubs and the venues. I’m sorry.
For several years, several physical and mental illnesses have been an obstacle to playing drums, but in the past few months, they have reached their limits, and a few days before the live show, I have been unable to sleep with a feeling of impatience.
I would like to refrain from explaining the details of those diseases and the details of the treatment here, but as a result, I can’t make “time and swing feeling” that I have valued the most in music through the drums.
After thinking about whether to let customers continue to listen to such a performance, or whether to stop the performance and resume activities when the drums return to satisfactory condition, I chose the latter path.
When I see musicians of my generation, as well as seniors who are 10 years old, 20 years old, and 30 years older than me, continuing their live activities vigorously despite having physical and mental problems, my “leaving the front line” is really pathetic, frustrating, and full of sorry feelings, but I would appreciate if you could understand.
I don’t know at this time whether the cancellation of this activity will be a “temporary pause” or a “full-scale retirement”. I would like to unravel the physical and mental problems that are now obstacles to playing drums one by one, and when I can calmly and happily play the drums again, I want to comeback to the stage.
The musicians who have performed with me so far, the Jazz clubs/venues who provided me the place, the audience who came to listen to my drums, and the Pit Inn members who coordinated all of them, Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
