INTERVIEW & PICK UP ARTIST
Otomo Yoshihide
Annual Yearend 4DAYS with 8 setsh

Starting with sound makers via free jazz, we will present totally unexpected, unpredictable 4 days from the Orchestra which Anyone Can Join to the soundtrack of Taiga drama (NHK Historical Drama).

My annual eight sets in a row will start with sound makers. The trio consists of the three members who were happened to be assigned a major reform of the next summer festival in Fukushima. To expel evil at the yearend to bring luck to the New Year, we will cheer up the world in all ages and countries. As a start, in the first evening, we will present our newly-born ONJQ that has recently started its activity. We are planning to make an album with this band next year.

On the second day, I will invite two respectful musicians who have been my long-time collaborators, to present acoustic numbers. We will play the popular song that you might be familiar with from the TV drama. Also in the evening of the second day, we will invite Hiroshi Yamazaki, a drummer who is one of the pioneers of Japanese free jazz, to play a free jazz guitar trio featuring Albert Ayler's numbers that Yamazaki used to play in Masayuki Takayanagi's Angry Waves.

And the main attraction of the eight sets in a row this year will be a workshop for 'The Orchestra which Anyone Can Join' in Daytime Show on the third day. Anyone is welcome to participate in the orchestra. No musical experience is required. You can bring whatever makes sounds - a musical instrument or a pot. We welcome anyone from a beginner to an experienced musician. This project originated from the idea I had soon after the quake in Fukushima, to form an ensemble of a mixture of people ranging from local residents who did not have musical experiences to professional musicians, to play music together by sharing simple directions and signs. I have been realizing this project both domestically and internationally in recent years, and am finally bringing this method to my home ground Pit Inn. Of course, anyone can come to see the performance as the audience. The participants for the orchestra are supposed to play with my Special Big Band on the next day, too. See how it's going.

In the evening of the third day, I will invite Tenniscoats and Yasuhiko Tachibana to play 'enigmatic' pop music that allows me to be free than anything else in this world. No one knows what is going to happen until the moment we get on the stage.

And on the last day, we will feature my Special Big Band. In the Daytime Show, we will present an enormous improvisational ensemble of my Special Big Band and the participants of 'The Orchestra Which Anyone Can Join'.

And in the Evening Show of the last day, we will play a wide range of music from soundtracks including a theme music for a major TV network's historical drama (still secret), free jazz numbers, Piazzolla's pieces, to the theme music of the TV drama Ama-Chan. Please enjoy the unpredictable repertoire of our band.
