Ever since I began working as a pianist, I've continued composing music that flows freely from my heart, unbound by genre. Creating music with my own hands was my very essence, yet I was profoundly drawn to the refined sounds of European Impressionist classical music, as well as the jazz and Brazilian music influenced by it. I studied these relentlessly, even sacrificing sleep, and I believe this became the crucial foundation that has carried me to where I am today.
Since releasing my first collection of works in 1990, I've consciously chosen not to be confined to the jazz scene, steadfastly pursuing my own piano sound without compromise. I've left behind collections of original compositions for solo and trio performances. But in 2022, I suddenly realized that my musical ideas also demand a larger ensemble...
Once I decided to put a horn in the front of the trio, Shigeharu Mukai on trombone immediately came to mind. As soon as I thought of his exceptional individuality, a whole song came together. I took it with me to negotiate his participation directly, and he accepted with pleasure! Though there were twists and turns afterward, as if guided by this serendipitous encounter, and thanks to Mukai-san's support—who resonated with my musical vision—we also assembled irreplaceable talents: Ryuichi Takase on trumpet and Benisuke Sakai on bass. Together with my ally of 40 years, Takamochi Baba on drums, the regular group “MAYO FIVE” was born.
Blessed with an ideal front duo and further enhanced by each member's unique character, new musical ideas and arrangements flowed continuously. In the fall of 2025, the new CD “MAYO FIVE” was completed as a double album featuring 12 entirely original tracks. After several preview live performances, we finally arrive at our appearance at Shinjuku Pit Inn, the iconic jazz venue in Japan. Reflecting on the long journey to this point fills us with profound emotion...
This group's style is undoubtedly “jazz.” But what each member brings to my original compositions is the very essence of “humanity” that comes with age. I'd be honored if you'd witness this journey with us. New songs keep adding to our repertoire with every live performance!
