Akira Sakata SOS
For over half a century, since joining the Yosuke Yamashita Trio in 1972, Akira Sakata, now 80, has continued to perform globally. His new band, ‘Akira Sakata SOS’, repeatedly forms and disbands various groups. The members are: Akira Sakata, a leading figure in free jazz; Nana Omori, a pianist who crosses the boundaries between free jazz and contemporary music; and Manabu Sakata (Akira Sakata's son), a drummer whose activities span from pop to jazz without borders. The three first performed together in 2017, and subsequently began activities as 'Akira Sakata COCODA' with Shinobu Kawai (bass) joining the lineup. In 2023, they released the CD 'Withered Sunflowers', which was well received. Starting with the 2024 Hokkaido tour, activities as a trio will also begin. In 2025, the band was named Akira Sakata SOS and released their 1st Album 'In a sentimental mood'. They are actively performing at festivals such as Earth Day and ‘Haru Ichiban: BE-IN LOVE-ROCK’, touring the Chugoku and Shikoku regions with stops in Kure, Tokushima, Okayama, Onomichi, Shimane, and Hiroshima, and embarking on a Tohoku tour starting from Ichinoseki BASIE. They are well-received by audiences of all ages and genders, including first-time listeners with no prior exposure to free jazz besides longtime fans (reactions include gasps of surprise and uproarious laughter). “I just want you to watch our unpredictable performances each time as if they were the scenery passing by the train window,” says Akira Sakata. This will be Akira Sakata's first Pit Inn Live as SOS. We hope you'll catch the sound of SOS.
