This is a very special event for me. Two nights at Pit Inn.

The first time I visited Japan was in 2005. This is now 20 years ago! Mizuho Yabe, Yoshihisa Saito, Mark Rappaport and Michiyo Yagi where key figures for the first concerts and opened many doors for me. Since then, I have visited Japan almost every year and I have established many long-term relationships, both musical and personal.

I remember very well, at an interview during the first visit, when asked about my favorite drummers. I answered Takeo Moriyama. They were shocked to know that a drummer from Norway knew of him. I had already listened a lot to the legendary Yamashita Trio and I remember very well, the first time I heard “Chiasma”. I was blown away by all three musicians, but mostly by Takeo Moriyama.

During the years after my first visit, I soon discovered all the greats of Japan; Masayuki Takayanagi, Masahiko Satoh, Otomo Yoshihide, Merzbow, Incapacitants, Hijokaidan, Painjerk and more. Not to forget the late and great Toshinori Kondo whom I miss a lot!
It was all a musical shock for me, and their powerful sounds blew me away.

I have been very fortunate to have played with many of the great musicians of Japan, of which, most are still alive. I have learnt incredibly much from them; on stage, off stage; on the road, off the road. They continue to challenge and surprise me, and I find myself being pushed very hard!
There is mutual interest to develop the music further and for every trip I make to Japan I come home a little different.

I have also discovered the traditional folk music of Japan; Okinawa: Seijin Noborikawa, Rinshō Kadekaru, Misako Oshiro. I love their music! I have now visited Okinawa many times and have built strong friendships.
During the pandemic I also discovered the music of Aomori: Tsugaru Shamisen: Takahashi Chikuzan and great singers like Ritsu Saito, Yuriko Haruno, Unchiku Narita, Eijiro Harada and more.
I am glad to discover so much of Japanese music and it is fascinating that a country has documented so much of its music and rich culture. I am thankful for this.

After these concerts I will visit Aomori for the Neputa festival. I can´t wait, but first:
For this residency, I have chosen new and longstanding partners. I want it to reflect the past and the present and they represent some of my strongest musical and personal relations. Masahiko Satoh, Akira Sakata, Otomo Yoshihide and Tatsu Yamamoto.
For this special trip, I will also bring three large Paiste gongs of 24-28 and 32”.

I am very grateful of Pit Inn and their entire staff, who has always shown continuous support for the music, and that I am allowed to present two nights of music. I hope to see many new and old fans of the music. I would also like to dedicate these two nights to Peter Brötzmann and Toshinori Kondo, whom I had the great pleasure of working with for many years.

Thanks also to Music Norway and Norsk Jazzforum for travel support.
