Pit Inn. This is the stage I looked at more than 50 years ago, wishing with all my heart that one day I would be standing here. Dreaming of becoming a professional musician, I feverishly asked the performers to let me beat the drums. Overcome by my persistence, they asked me, "Do you want to play next?" What? Yes! “Please!" Without saying what the piece was, the saxophonist began to play. I tapped the cymbals, relying only on the four beats. One-two-three-four, one-two-three-four, one-two-three-four. No, it doesn't work. Then, I hear a voice. "Stop it. Stop,” I heard someone say in a small voice. "Stop it, Stop." Oh, that means I should stop hitting the cymbals? I finally understood what that meant. But I didn't stop. When all was over, I regretted asking him to let me beat the drums. Turn back time to the beginning, I hoped, and let it be a dream. I had been miserable a lot in college and in the orchestra, so I knew how to comfort myself. "Everyone starts out like that. Everyone fails at first.” That's how kids grow up. That's right! I'm going to be a pro in the future. I was moved by my own thoughts even though the professional musicians were looking at me coldly then.

Two years later, I played drums at the packed Pit Inn. "Hey! I'm a self-proclaimed pro drummer now!" But it wasn't as exciting as that day when I kept playing the drums even though they told me to stop. I wonder why. January 2022. My first live performance at Pit Inn in a long time. I was facing a group of outstanding professional musicians. I feel like I am going to have the same trouble breathing in a feverish state of mind as I did then. Yes! I have to come up with some excuse. "We all suck at first? Do I get better and better? Will I be a pro someday?" No, none of this is a good excuse. There will be no growth, no momentum. There is only aging, there is only decay. What excuse do I have? Probably, I shouldn't act like a "pro". Amateurs are better. I want to play like an amateur! Amateurs are awesome. All you have to do is enjoy yourself! It's okay to play wrong! Starting this year, Takeo Moriyama will aim to be a "self-proclaimed amateur" musician and will stick to that goal!
