‘Funk! Dol-Col' is a trio born from the strongest groove of Paul Jackson and Shuichi "PONTA" Murakami. With new and powerful players, the spirits of Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman will be throbbing in 2022.
Freedom of Music
I saw the movie 'Summer of Soul' last year, which showed me New York in 1969, and my mind and heart were completely transported to the time when I was living in New York, although my timing was a little off in 1974 and 1975. It wasn't as epic as the movie, but we did play a summer festival in a park, and we even attended a gospel concert at a church in Harlem hosted by the Black Panther. Most importantly, I had the most fun and, in retrospect, the best experience of my life, being in and out of Studio We and other lofts all over the place.
At that time, without even much experience, I had been rigidly stuck on free jazz. However, in those days in New York, such rigidity melted away with each passing day. Anything could be done there. In fact, many of the free jazz musicians were also fans of soul, rock, and ethnic music (especially African), and there were times when we would have a wild free jazz session in the middle of the night, but by dawn we would be laughing and rubbing shoulders and singing along to Stevie Wonder's hits. John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Miles Davis, Satchmo, King Curtis, B.B. King, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, not to mention the Art Ensemble Of Chicago saying it out loud, were all equal parts of 'great black music'.
And for me, free music didn't stop at black music. Once you start walking, you can't stop. And then it goes sideways and sideways. I got to blues, soul, funk, African, Latin, Arab, Asian, klezmer (though all of these are just the surface). It's just my way of doing things, and I don't know where I'll drift off to. But I can tell you this. "Freedom!"
This time in our 5DAYS of 'Petit Ohshigoto’, we will present the original 'Komatcha Klezmer with Nozomi Matsunaga' which stemmed from klezmer, ‘A.K.I. Blues Band' which was born from blues via Aki Yashiro, free funk trio with KenKen and Yukino Matsuura, the gods and kings of improvisation, Koichi Makigami and Kazuhisa Uchihashi, and my duo with the one and only 'Tavito Nanao'. Yes, for these five days, "Every day is free!"
