TOPICS
This is the second album from jazz bassist Akiyoshi Shimizu, a former finalist in the Jazz category of the American composition contest "John Lennon Songwriting." Featuring four chamber woodwinds, "The Stars Change" is finally being released on December 10, 2025.
Shimizu was interested in the unique sounds that only chamber woodwinds can produce, and this collection of works was written specifically for a four-woodwind septet: two flutes, a clarinet, a bass clarinet (depending on the piece, three flutes + clarinet, or three flutes + bass clarinet) and a piano trio.
Shimizu's unique and distinctive original compositions, the delicate yet sometimes explosive harmonies of the overlapping woodwinds, and the deep, surging, and dynamic sound of the piano trio will transport listeners to a new world.
The album was recorded by an elite group of musicians boasting high levels of improvisational and ensemble talent: Akemi Ota(flute), Shun Katayama (flute), Tokuhiro Doi (clarinet, flute), Kensuke Miyaki (bass clarinet, flute), Yuichi Narita(piano), and Sota Kira (drums).
All songs (except for the free improvisation in M10) were composed and arranged by Akiyoshi Shimizu.
Of the 10 tracks, 6 are septets (M1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9), 3 are 2-flute quintets (M2, 6, 8), and 1 is a free improvisation by piano trio (M10).
